The Role
As The Recount grows, so does the quantity of what we put out into the world. But the quality of our journalism remains as important as ever, and the most important aspect is getting it all correct. That’s a must. To that end, we’re looking for a dedicated fact-checker/copy editor who can ensure that our mission to inform is not hindered by inaccuracies and mistakes.
We need you across so much of what we do: our morning newsletter, our Wire video service, our web and app copy, our accompanying podcast copy, and some of our social copy as well. This is an essential role for us, and you should be up for the task of helping our journalists be as engaging and informative as possible, while maintaining our journalistic standards. You are diligent, you are thorough, and you want to go line-by-line across everything to help us uphold those standards day after day.

This role will report directly to the Managing Editor.

Responsibilities Include:

    • Newsletter: The day begins early with the morning newsletter — every fact in every section, however big or small, should be challenged and checked to ensure 100% accuracy. This includes grammatical errors and typos
    • Wire/Social: You’ll be responsible for fact-checking captions for content published on The Recount’s “Wire” and social media accounts
    • Website/App: Work with our full-time staff writer to ensure all copy for our O&O web/app has no factual errors.
    • Podcast: Work with podcast producers to provide clean copy for each episode/each series for our streaming partners and our O&O platforms
    • Internal Organization & Workflows: You’ll have a large hand in developing and maintaining our editorial style guide and fact-checking workflows, and will be responsible for ensuring The Recount’s voice and tone is consistent across all platforms


    • 3+ years of fact-checking and/or copy editing experience in a newsroom or working for a media site. News experiences preferred
    • Must be available to work early mornings, evenings or whenever assigned. While shift would be consistent, we are a live newsroom and require occasional after-hours coverage for events like election debates. Flexible shifts but scheduling is fair and manageable
    • Must have an in-depth knowledge of using search engines and social media platforms to locate and lean on original sources of information
    • Working knowledge of SEO best practices
    • Ability to work across Google Suite and Slack, making fast changes alongside a talented team of producers and editors
    • Ability to speak up in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment and suggest changes where warranted
    • Excellent communication skills with a strong attention to detail
    • Proactive and self motivated
